Sealed product is anything still in its factory packaging. Some people buy it to open, and others buy it to hold. Either way, knowing the common product types and how to compare them saves money.

The common product types

  • Booster pack: the basic unit, with a random assortment of cards. TCGplayer reported that Scarlet & Violet era packs launched at an MSRP of $4.49 (source).
  • Booster bundle: a small pack of boosters with no extras.
  • Elite Trainer Box (ETB): booster packs plus accessories like sleeves, energy cards, dice and a storage box. The pack count is printed on the box.
  • Booster box: a display of packs, typically 36 for main English expansions. Some special sets aren't sold in booster boxes.
  • Collection boxes and tins: packs plus promo cards. These are often priced for the promo.

Compare cost per pack

Divide the price by the number of packs. Then decide what the extras are worth to you, such as a promo card you'd otherwise buy as a single.

Open it or hold it?

Opening is fun, but on average it rarely beats buying the singles you want. Our open vs keep sealed calculator and pull-rate simulator show the math using real card prices.

Holding sealed product is a bet that it will be worth more after it goes out of print. It sometimes works, but it ties up cash, needs safe storage, and isn't guaranteed. Reprints can push prices down. Nothing on PullMeter is investment advice. Please read our Terms.

Buying tips

  • Inspect shrink wrap. Resealed products are a known scam, so learn what factory wrap looks like for the product you're buying.
  • Be careful with "loose" packs from unknown sellers, which can be searched or weighed.
  • Keep receipts if you plan to sell later. Buyers trust provenance.
