How do I start collecting Pokémon cards?

A simple path many collectors follow:

  1. Pick a focus: a favorite Pokémon, one set, or one artist. Browse 24 recent sets.
  2. Learn the products: a booster box has 36 packs of 10 cards plus a Basic Energy, an ETB has 9 packs and a Booster Bundle has 6 (Pokémon's official product info).
  3. Know what things cost: the median card we track is $0.20. Completing Journey Together as singles is about $396.53 today.
  4. Learn condition: TCGplayer uses Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged (condition guide).
  5. Protect cards: sleeves and toploaders (storage guide).
